Bread and Puppet Theater was founded in 1962 by Peter Schumann on NYC's Lower East Side. Besides rod-puppet and hand-puppet shows staged for children, early productions dealt with rents, rats, police and other problems of that neighborhood. More complex theater pieces, in which sculpture, music, dance and language were treated as equal partners, followed. Meanwhile, the puppets grew bigger and bigger. In 1970, Bread & Puppet relocated to Vermont to serve as theater-in-residence at Goddard colelge. Four years later, it moved into its current home, a farm in Glover, VT, where its members maintain a museum housing veteran puppets. Glover is also home to Bread & Puppet's annual summer spectacular, Our Domestic Resurrection Circus.
