HYSTOPOLIS PUPPET THEATRE was founded in 1982 by Michael Schwabe and Lawrence Basgall. Over the last 10 years the Chicago-based company has devoted its energies to establishing puppetry as a vital and legitimate art form. Its productions have ranged from traditional Punch and Judy shows to adaptations of popular fairy tales, to Elmer Rice¹s classic 1923 play The Adding Machine. In 1985, Hystopolis moved into the Free Street Community Arts Center, which now houses its offices and 75-seat theater.
